A few nights ago, some friends and I decided to see the latest Star Wars movie, Return of the Sith. This movie made me think of a concept that is key to great part of the hypnotherapy that I do, and is an excellent example of how not to lead one's life.
Much of what makes the story of Star Wars so appealing is the change disconcerting that occurs in Anakin Skywalker. How a man can become the supreme good of the embodiment of evil? We took the Jedi Anakin love and hate the same man, only a few days later. It is both surprising and worrying. What is even more surprising (and perhaps troubling) is that, on the surface, seems that Anakin's love for Padmé is what leads him, ultimately, the dark side.
This is an excellent example of the way in which Jung asserts that the works human shadow. The shadow, according to Jung, is a huge portion of our personality to ignore. We deny, and locked up. Once it is locked, it becomes destructive. We see this in many ways: a person who denies something about themselves becomes self-destructive behaviors like drinking, or even worse, becomes violent. It is commonly accepted many anti-social behaviors have their roots in the internal conflict of a person.
Anakin's inner conflict is severe. He lives like a Jedi, which is more or less, a monastic life. So many of the other Jedi do this very well and Anakin fails. He fails the moment he begins to let his shadow expression. What has been locked for so long has grown vicious, and now consumes and destroys it. The image of Anakin locked in the chapel of Darth Vader shows that has really become consumed, that the shadow has loose, all that is good for him has been destroyed.
There is a lesson to learn from this and is a lesson that goes back thousands of years. There are parts of us that we, or society, what does not. We have instincts, desires and urges that are, in a way is unacceptable. It is natural that we should repress them do what they can be accepted by those around us. Unfortunately, when we oppress what we do not like ourselves, it causes problems. It is the root of many neuroses and other problems in our lives.
The solution to this problem seems simple and is a monumental task: we must strive to do everything ourselves. That means that when we feel the urgency to do something unacceptable, we must step back and examine that urge. We have to find out what is at the root of that momentum, and we have to integrate into our lives in a positive way. We must understand that we are good, and that applies to everything about us. Something that has been shoved aside and allow it to become bitter and cruel is simply a natural part of us went wrong, and it is for us to address that. To live well, a healthy and happy life, we must accept our dark side.
If Anakin Skywalker (and Jedi) were to embrace the dark side in a healthy manner, it would be more powerful than ever. They feel emotions, love, anger, fear and hatred and all those emotions, would be in the proper perspective. They would also have access to power all these emotions, offers its adversaries, the Sith. Maintenance of the harmful effects of some of human emotions at bay does not help the Jedi at all, only leads to dramatic outbursts of the same emotions. The lesson is simple and very important: embrace your dark side in a healthy manner, and you will be happier and more powerful.
