How to treat a fever in a baby/toddler?

A fever with no other symptoms. I have been given conflicting information. Some say strip baby to cool them down, give them a cool (not cold) bath if it the fever is quite high. Other information I have says do not cool the babies skin temperature as this can raise the babies core temperature. Which is correct?

The Canadian Pediatric Society suggests not treating a fever unless the child is fussy or shows other signs of feeling unwell. Removing some of the child's clothes is recommended, but not all clothes. As well, put child in a cool/lukewarm bath is also not recommended- these things may cause shivering and shivering will cause the body temperature to further rise- making the child more comfortable.

The thing to remember is that the temperature of a fever is not related to the seriousness of the infection/illness- meaning a child with a very serious infection can have a low grade fever and a child with a mild infection can have a very high temperature. Also high fevers are not the cause of febrile seizures- febrile seizures occur during the rise of a fever- and is often the first sign of a fever. Fortunately (although not harmful to your child) febrile seizures only occur in 2-5% of infants/children.
